Hi guys,
It's been a long time since I've read this book and I was wondering if anyone knew the title or author because I've been searching for it for a long time.
Here's some of the details:
Science fiction book. I was in high school when I read it, so that's between 1999 and 2003. I don't know if it was new at the time.
Main character is a female alien. Humanoid.
Sort of adopted by human parents but I think it's more like she lives in a lab. I don't recall a "parent" relationship with anybody, but I could be wrong.
She suffers from some kind of fever, later in the book they discover a trigger for this fever is a kind of flower, she laid down in a field of them and was wearing one in her hair.
She takes pills to avoid the fever, at the end of the book, the reunite her with the rest of her species, they are ASTONISHED at the pills she has, which allow her fevers to be in cycles as wide as YEARS; their fevers are in cycles of MONTHS.
She has extra long fingers.
She is flat-chested.
She has feathery, white hair.
She has sex with a human teenager. He says he loves her, asks if she loves him. She replies that she cherishes him; is that the same thing?
She is described as wearing an orange jumpsuit, and the cover may feature her wearing one.
Turns out she was promised to an alien boy, he is very alarmed to hear she mated with a human, but is reassured that she doesn't seem to have bonded with him (a chemical thing) as a result of it. They were some of the last "healthy" children born, and are supposed to help repopulate the species...
