I'm a long time fan of Asimov, and especially like his short stories.

I was having a conversation with a friend, when he told me about the Asimov short story he likes the most - about a kid that goes to many schools, and keep failing, and trying to learn all kind of things, and how he grow up and needs to solve all kind of problems, and need to use all the things he learned to solve it. At the end he becomes a teacher.

Well, sorry for the very confused description, but that's what I have :)

I wonder if anybody recognize this story?
When I heard his description I was sure it's "Profession" (one of my most loved short stories), but he insisted it's not profession...

Thanks in advance to any idea or thought

My tip would have been "Profession" as well. If it's not that, then it's not an Asimov story. Maybe your friend read it in an anthology edited by Asimov.

I don't recognise it, I'm afraid. I've read a fair amount of Asimov and I cannot place it. I tend to agree with Darkday, it could be from a book he edited.

Thank you for the answers.

While searching the net, I also found "the fun they had", and while it's a very nice story, it doesn't look as the story I'm looking for.

Yes, it's possible that it's a short story by another writer. My friend is sure it's Asimov, but indeed Asimov also edited short story collections.

I'm still looking ...
