The great statesman and symbol for unity Nelson Mandela died today the fifth of December 2013. Let us all mourn one of the greatest symbols for equality between the races since Martin Luther King.

Just heard this on the radio.

A truly great man - South Africa, the Commonwealth and the world are the poorer for his passing.

Requiescat in pace, old man - you did good...

One of the greatest, and an example of what a true statesman should be. RIP

As Alc said. Please pay attention to this you modern politicians!

RIP Nelson Mandela, may your journey into the next life be a good one.

I can't think of one other single individual whose death could have such a profound effect on the whole planet.

My favourite words from him: I'm not a saint, unless you count a sinner who keeps on trying.

Such humility, such strength in adversity, such a display of forgiveness and reconciliation. An example to us all of what it truly means to be human.

I checked my Facebook feed this morning and read the sad news. Couldn't believe it at first. Our country is in mourning. I work in the municipal head office for the City of Cape Town and just came back to my office after listening to the Mayor give her speech. She managed until the end before succumbing to tears. Pretty much sums up how we all feel.

I was gratified to hear both the Mayor (Democratic Alliance) and the ANC representative call for unity in this time of mourning. They spoke about togetherness and remembering what binds us as human beings and citizens of South Africa.

We must remember the legacy of this great man. He never claimed to be perfect and his flaws made him a better man. His spirit of forgiveness brought this country back from the brink. He inspired love and devotion in all who met him and he was much loved by his people.

RIP Tata Madiba. We will miss you.

One of the few people whose life genuinely made the world a different place.

For those that labeled him as a terrorist his own words sum up my feelings perfectly:

"A freedom fighter learns the hard way that it is the oppressor who defines the nature of the struggle."

RIP Nelson Mandela.

Interestingly, the, 'Daily Mail,' who despised him when he was alive, are doing a special on his life and achievements today.

I'm just waiting for David "Hang Nelson Mandela," Cameron to weigh in with his crocodile tears (perfectly true, Cameron was one of the leading lights of the organisation that proposed Mandela should hang - and produced posters to that effect - during the campaign for his release).
