Some time ago, I read a book about an older man whose yacht was struck by a meteorite. He awoke to find himself on another planet in a different body (warrior type). The planet was desert-y and he had as a companion a giant cat(?) that he would ride. He also shared a slightly telepathic bond with the cat.
He had no knowledge of who he was in this new world and only remembered his old life. He had to make his way back to his town and pretend his way through the people that knew him as this warrior.
There was some political intrigue as I remember and at one point, he finds a woman whom he believes was a woman that was on the yacht with him when the meteorite struck though she has no recollection of her life on Earth.
