I recall nothing about the book other than that the last thing that happened was that the main character smoked a cigarette, then flew away from the earth (no spaceship required). This was the surprise ending; there was up to that point no clue that this individual was anything other than an ordinary human being. I think I recall reading another or other books by the same author that had similarly good surprise endings. I read the book in 1968 or so. Thanks in advance for any and all help.
