Okay, I'll start off by saying that these last couple of months have seen me seized by a depression that made me not want to think of writing for a while. Thus, I was absent from these boards.

But today, just as I was starting to bring myself out of my funk, I got the following in my inbox:

"Dear Josh,

Thank you for sending in the sample of Darkened Fragments..."

I almost quit reading. Every time a reply letter starts off this way, the next word is always "Unfortunately..." But I kept reading anyway.

"I enjoyed what I read..."

Yah-huh. They all say they do.

"...and would like to see the full manuscript. Can you please send it to [Angry Robot Books email address]."

I'm still on cloud nine and don't know how to come down.

Well done, a request for a Full is really good, mate. Here's hoping you get more good news from AR.

Thanks, everyone. I'll definitely update when I know more. But this is further than I've ever gotten. The funk was brought on by multiple rejections of short stories, including one I got yesterday from Tor. When I saw Angry Robot's name in my inbox, I thought "dear lord, not another one", but then I read it and had to remind myself to breathe!

I hope this goes even further. Promise you'll remember us when you've got a seven season HBO TV show?
 
I sent in my MS, and am now filled with dread.

I have edited it, but my main beta readers were my wife and this site. This site found quite a bit that needed to be changed before I submitted it for publication, and I only posted short bits from it.

So, I'm terrified that they'll find enough they don't like that they'll pass.

Lol, I have no dreams beyond simply seeing my work on the shelf of a book store. I write because I need to write, because I couldn't not write, and my highest aspiration is that some day, I will have a substantial body of work that the public is reading and enjoying.

But even if I get all that and more, I will never forget where I started, or those who helped me get there.

For that matter, I won't start counting chickens before they hatch. Nothing's been promised, and this is merely the door opening a crack wider than it was before.

Maybe, but worrying too much about it isn't going to help, except in building ulcers. ;) You can always edit in the mean time.

At least you've got proof that your writing can garner interest. So, you're on the right track.

You're right, of course. And for that matter, I'm fairly certain that the copy I sent them did not have several of the edits I made after other chrons critiqued it.
