What are you working on right now?

I thought there was a thread like this, but I've searched back and the only one I could find was 'What do we all write?' which isn't really what I mean.

So, this'll be interesting. We all like talking about ourselves...

What are you working on, writing wise, right now. It can be editing, research, short stories, novel, comp entries. Anything you're working on, I want to hear about. As long as it's related to writing. If you're fixing your car or something, I don't care.

At the moment I'm mostly working on the revisions from the publisher with allmywires, but when I'm not doing that, I'm working on my Allery story.

More specific? Today, I had to add more kink to the romance. The publisher liked a certain scene we had, but wanted more pre-scene stuff. So it meant I had to put a weird search thing into Google. I won't share. :D But I ended up adding almost 400 words.

With my Allery story I'm currently researching lots of drug abuse stuff. One of my characters is a junkie. I was watching a vid on YouTube about a guy in prison going through withdrawals and learning about how the veins in your arms kinda disappear.

Your turn.

Well, I have a bad habit where I build all my characters within their worlds to the point it's ridiculous... but then don't act and actually write a whole thing. That said, currently I have begun ! My 1st draft of what I hope could be my first book - eeee. It's a story based around one of my original babies. At the moment it doesn't have a definitive genre, but I reckon paranormal covers it. Got the flu this week too, so using sick days to chill and do some research about the meanings behind the Native American names for the different full moons that make up a lunar year. Oh, and as a fun side project, I am getting ready to enter a writing competition for short stories this weekend, so that should be a good time.

I'm just working on rewriting a fictional story that I created 2 years ago, it's not exactly unique in its plot but I more than enjoy writing it, and then going back to read it again afterward. While I haven't drawn any images to go along with this story, I love that I can imagine the characters and locations within the story as I'm creating and reading it.

The general plot is that a female protagonist finds herself getting trapped in another realm and undergoing magical changes. Living in that realm for weeks before being able to come close to finding a way home.

I have a novel being beta'd by a well known chronner, prior to submission.

About to submit a film to a film festival. I keep tweaking edits, but you reach a point where you just have to send it off and have done with fretting.

Editing an anthology of my local writers groups stories, arranged a provisional 100 copies with the printers.

Stuck in the middle (40k) of writing a YA novel which keeps slipping into adult territory and having to be yanked back. The "texture" has changed considerably since I started it and I am getting worried about cohesiveness. This was mainly caused by two years of Covid Interruptus of the work flow.

That's healthy, especially if, reading it, you have a few "Wow, did I write that?" moments.

I'm trying to finish editing and self-publishing my second SF novella, Anagama on Smashwords, I just finished scheduling 4 posts to my fiction blog (madgirlscientist.substack.com if you are curious), and I'm trying to finish my fantasy novel Wings. Wings is about a struggling writer and skeptic who is befriended by angels.

Class, gonna try making a comic with another (proper artist) lad. I haven't drawn in thirty years and have no training or skill but the other lad seems to reckon it'll work so why not. Should be different.
Been working away on Nancy G (sounds like a euphemism, but it's an all ages friendly story) -it's very hard to fit in (more non euphamism!) so am averaging a chapter every two weeks. It's taking roughly three hours to write and record per episode -the advantage of narrating is I can ad-lib boring bits and don't need to edit chronic typo and grammar mistakes. I keep an eye on the Spotify dohickey and it has bursts of downloads which is either a good sign or some AI tomfoolery.
Did a standup gig last Wed and blanked. Had what I thought was a solid bit but forgot the whole thing. Crowd was in stitches anyway so no harm done -I suppose there is something funny in watching someone struggle on stage.
Lesson learned anyways, slow down -burning the candle at both ends is not good for the head. I sorta knew something was gonna give as I'd been flat out with the general mechanics of life, and tried to shove creativity in ontop. So the comic will definitely be a slow and slightly bonkers thing to (not) behold;)

With Final Frontier done and currently with beta readers, I've started working on a series of short stories/novellas that will form two anthologies. Ten stories related to my Draconia books. Five stories have already been written but are in need of editing if not extensive re-writing. The other five will be completely new stories. I re-wrote the first story, changing it from first person to third person, and now adding a whole new sequence.

Better than remembering everything and nobody laughing.

Just put a novel out to query and alternating between the direct sequel, editing a 1st draft complete stand-alone in the same universe and trying to figure out a new concept. I have the idea of a particular AI character that i can see, but trying to find the right context for them.

Concept One: Rainpunk YA where humans sent AI's out to terraform planets and they went haywire and now there are human-animal hybrids set into a strict class structure, focused on a low class otter-kid finding one of the AI's I've got a couple really good scenes but i can't find my groove.

Concept Two: Tech thriller based on all the alien gov't stuff going on that focuses on there being alien AI tech on earth and each faction is fighting for control of it. A scientist escapes, connects with a con-artist white-hat Kevin Mitnick style MC and they dodge various gov't and corp interests.

Same core AI character, but trying to find the right setting for them.

I’ve managed to recreate, from memory, the ACW wargames rules I was working on previously. Only 8-9k words, and more a technical exercise in problem solving than true ‘writing’, but the longest I’ve been on a keyboard in over a year. Salvaging some of the sections I posted here and Absolute Write for critique has given me the start of a couple of stories, so not as daunting as rewriting the series continuations I lost.

Something in one of the threads got me thinking about story structure. Gonna try a standup gig tonight but feed out all the punchlines before the jokes are setup. I don't think we need an x, y, z format all the time -been wondering if AI can mimic our storytelling then maybe storytelling painted itself into a corner ...anyway, I'll sort of find out later.

Right, that went ...very badly. I was happy with how I went about it but it was like kryptonite to the audience. It bombed so badly I was laughing to myself at the reaction -cleared most of the room save a few baffled punters who weren't really sure what was going on;) I still think most people are smart enough to be given a punchline and work back but I won't be let do that live again.

I’m actually working on my first novel. I have a lot of ideas written down for other ones, but this one I’ve had the drive to write the most-it’s a sci-fi fantasy novel, as that genre has always just interested me so much!

An issue I have is I’m super picky and I like to rewrite literally everything. Not sure if anyone else has this issue, but I nitpick my writing a lot. I also have had trouble focusing a good chunk of my time on this book lately, bc I just got my first job out of college and it’s been crazy.

Good luck to all of you!!

Right now I am tempting the Fates by writing about Indigenous inspired fantasy. I’m about as white, male, and middle aged as you can get. The idea is to write an anthology or non-linear short story book similar to Robert E Howard and Conan The Barbarian except in a distance North American past. Considering Howard wrote in the ‘20s and ‘30s, the idea is to be more sensitive to the cultures. I have found a couple of Indigenous friends who have been helping me along so I don’t step on too many toes. In the end, someone is going to be mad about it. Three stories completed so far and I have some good feedback on them.

I’m also writing a steampunk noir style series focused on a fairly corrupt New York detective. The story centres around the corruption and money graft going on regarding the building of a Victorian Age Space Elevator. That one is finished for the moment :) and I’m looking at trying out more of a spiritualist/horror tilt with the new one.

I recently looked at the first novel I wrote back when I was 20. I slid it back into the darkness of my desk draw. Perhaps someday I will have the courage to edit and rewrite it. Teh first one is always excepting.

I'm working on writing my first novel for the second time, since things have changed so much since my original drafts. It's about a world where Science and Magic have risen side by side, fueling each others growth but also causing fractures in society throughout the past, and so we see a main society where almost all tech is created via magic so they're not relying on tech as much as magic and what it can create and one where most tech is created because of the existence of magic and trying to divorce being reliant on it. But it's also about characters who face real world problems, such as being a single father, being unable to face the truth of things you've done, or wondering if what you have done makes you a good or bad person, of familiar/cultural expectations, of love, family, sacrifice and how easily we turn on one another in pursuit of what we think personally is right and true. Also, it's about mistranslations and misguided beliefs.

Been writing Nancy Goodaim, Episode 22 -was hoping to record it tonight but am dosed with a head cold. Should have it done by Thursday. Sent off a grant application to turn WotW2022 into a 'stage' show -didn't ask for money, just the use of a theater lobby. Was able to pull off a live show last year thanks to a sponsor and a local pub letting us use the venue, but I reckon it could be a lot better with room to run around and do prop/ slapstick mayhem. It's a long shot but if you throw enough eggs at a wall there will eventually be one that doesn't break ...maybe;) Am also goint to revisit a Covid era story called 'A touch of social isolation' about an extraterrestrial garden of biology, and give it the online audio treatment -I like it because the few folk that read it came back wondering whether the protagonist had gone mad or actually visited outer space, and that was exactly where I wanted the reader to end up. Will see if it works on audio.
