I've been looking for this book for years and years. I posted here several years back...hasn't done any good, at least not so far. No one reads old books anymore...just new and newer stuff...*sigh.
However, just in case, I wanted to put some more details from the book:

The story opened with Singer making his way through the woods back to his home village. There was a woman in his village too, who had also been gone for a time, and she had a child with her...a boy I believe, and not very old, maybe 7...possibly a few years older.

There were some mysterious deaths that had the people on edge....bodies ripped apart in a manner unlike anything they had seen before. Singer was feared by his people, but he set out to find out who...or what...was killing people.

At one point, it seemed that it was the woman who was the killer....that she would transform into some sort of killing vortex when threatened. But it turned out that it was her child....some sort of mutation that allowed him to transform into something truly weird when threatened.

Then, at the end, Singer and the woman discovered there were other people on the planet...up high in some sort of fortress...with technology, and answers.

Anybody out there know what book this is??? Sure would appreciate any help with it :)

I took a look at your original post, and that one I would hazard a guess is "Masters of Solitude" by Marvin Kaye and Parke Godwin. I read it not long ago, and it fits your description of starting with a protagonist named Singer who has mental powers and had been banished from his woodland village home.

Details here don't match that story, though -- it's possibly the sequel ("Wintermind"), which I haven't read?

I read one that had a name like Death Song. The book was like two books. The first one starts off with singer as a boy who flees a bad living situation to a culture that is primitive and horses are big part of their life. During the summer months they hire out as mercenaries to the people in the lowlands. Singer grows up and becomes a fierce warrior. Then the mountain that his people live in is blown up and all his people are killed. He is captured in a lowland city that is in feudal times. The second half of the book he is captured in a high tech area and they are studying him because he is very different from these people. He escapes and eventually becomes an assistant for a colonel partly because he has mental powers including some healing powers. He meets friends and they eventually go against the heartless leaders of the high tech fashion. He eventually learns to teleport.
im looking for this book.
I don’t think the book your looking for is master of solitude which I have read.

I book I’m looking for is not the masters of solitude but sounds sort of similar. The cover of the paperback is a field with knee high grass. Soldiers are walking beside hovercraft. There’s no Kris or semi sentient rats in this one. There is nasty monks who get doled out bits of tech by the high tech people who came in a later colony ship.
