Who were the two guys?

Who were the two guys who Arya overheard? They were talking about the possibility of killing Arya's father. Who were they? Did anyone know their identities?

Illyrio and Varys, according to the TV program.

That actually surprised me when I watched the show. I read the books first, and maybe it was me not seeing things, but I don't think they mentioned who it was in the books. I certainly didn't think it would be those two.

In the book it is specifically left up in the air in order to give some mystery and drama to the scene, but I think there were some clues that really lead us to that conclusion later in the series (ie Varys's standard jailer disguise)

There are lots of giveaways or maybe even some corrections in the TV series.

But not the other guy.

We've known the identity of those two men for years before the show ever aired. It was one of the easier things to figure out in this series. There are plenty of threads about it on this forum if you go searching. If TK-421 were still around I'm sure he would have already pulled up like 10 threads discussing it. Actually, probably a bad idea since you'll probably get a ton of spoilers for later books if you look even a little. Just trust us on this one until you get deeper into the series (like after book 3).

yeah, both old news, and not difficult to determine.
Varys is obvious... doesn't Arya's chapter say... one wore the uniform of a guard (and we know later that Varys does pose as a guard regularly enough).
The other, Illyrio is easily identified by his immense fatness and i'm sure it mentions an accent...
