Put simply, my reservations have been reinforced by my proof readers/editors and my next book needs a new 'descriptive name'.

It's a single saga told in over fifty short & flash stories (and five appendices).

Anyway, it's not a novel. To make it such would contradict the original intent, something that I have finally returned to after a period of delusion.

So. What would one call this? 'Anthology' and 'collection' do not strike me as fitting (although correct, and thus they are the current defaults).

Your suggestions would be very welcome.

The act of writing a single story over many short installments is typically referred to as a serial. When these are sold together on Amazon it's typically called a boxed set, compendium, omnibus, or others.

I depends on closely related the stories are. You say it's a single saga. Does it involve recurring characters? Or does it cover such a long period of time that generations live and die in the gap between one story and the next? What links the stories? A quest? A curse? A war? Something else?

If we had the answers to those questions, it might be easier to answer your question.

Although I think there is nothing wrong with just calling it a saga. You don't have to tell people it's a novel or a collection. You could just say, "... my book. It's a saga." And perhaps on the cover it might look something like this:

Title
A Saga

Interesting point, Teresa, and I like it a lot. It's about a space war, covers four-centuries, has recurring characters, plus four major factions over the course of the saga. A single tale told from multiple viewpoints.

It's this one: http://www.sffchronicles.co.uk/foru...-eighth-book-a-science-fantasy-space-war.html

multitude, as in 'battle cries; the multitude'

letters

the seconds of the war ( as in the seconds of a committee meeting.)

en masse

mosaic, as in a story 'mosaic'

cameo collective

roll call

the company.. or a company of tales

a jigsaw novel

colony

robert lewis stevenson called his poetry collection 'a garden of verses' in that spirit yours would be a garden of prose
a history
an appendix
a story web

In this case, how about the military words for collections?

A Brigade of Stories
Legion
Battalion
Company
Squadron
Contingent
Regiment
Multitude
Battery
Flight
Formation
Platoon
Fleet

Thank you, folks. There were a number supplied that I hadn't considered.

In the end, as I have always described The Borsen Incursion as a saga, I have gone with Teresa's suggestion... Why call it anything? The back cover notes that it's a 'saga without compare' (because I haven't seen anything like this done before :) ) and mentions that it's a tale told in short fiction pieces.

Ebook publication in about ten days, paperback on April 24th.
