The beginning of the book was set in a spaceship that was travelling a great distance to find a new planet to colonize. Once there, the colonists have a rough time adjusting to the strange laws of physics - for example, one cannot cut down the trees unless they are heated up first.
Unfortunately that is the most vivid detail that I can remember. Does anyone recognize this story?
