80's book; lonely musician, small female good dragon, large evil dragon...

Small dragon follows large one from their universe to ours where she attempts to stop his evil plans. She recruits the protagonist (musician) and teaches him to use magic to assist her. At books end he is transformed into male dragon and they both return to her universe as mates.

This has been making me crazy the last few weeks. I remembered it waking up from a nice sleep. Any help will be greatly appreciated as I'd like to reread it and share it with my fantasy-loving daughter.

If your main character is a cellist, I'm pretty sure you're looking for "Make Way For Dragons!" by Thorarinn Gunnarsson. First in a series of four. I loved this book!
