Earth space man crashes on a green peopled planet.

Around 1979 I came across a book about a space traveler from earth, who crashes on a planet peopled by green humans, who have six legged bear type animals as companions, life long. He befriends a boy, who dies, but is reborn from a tree like plant, into which the others put his body. His six legged bear is also reborn with him.

That's all I can remember, but if anyone remembers the name/ author of this book, I'd love to read it again.
It's a super strange story.
