I am curious about the Steampunk genre as I haven't read anything like it before.

Any recommendations? Where should I begin? Which books? Which authors? :)

If you want something light and fun, with vampires and werewolves thrown in, you can try Gail Carriger's books. She has an adult and a YA series. I've read her Parasol Protectorate books (the adult series).

Although technically gearpunk and not steampunk, Brandon Sanderson's YA The Rithmatist is very, very good.

The one I often see cited as the "Founder" of the modern form of the genre. (Though it goes back surprisingly farther actually) is "The Difference Engine" by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling. Still one of the best too, IMO.

Try:
Gideon Smith and the Mechanical Girl ( and the rest of the series) David Barnett
Stephen Hunt's Jackelian Series.
You might want to have a nosey at Toby Frost's Space Captain Smith series.
Let's not forget Jonathan Greens Pax Britannia either.

I didn't get along with Cherie Preist's Boneshaker but that's another that gets plenty of mentions.

And if you have not yet read Leviathan and the rest of that series from Scott Westerfeld. You really should :D

Not sure about the rankings, for that 604 Best list, but just about all the books I'd rec are there.

Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve - very nice man, too. I met him and he not only signed my copy of Mortal Engines, but he also drew a pic of a zeppelin in it.

He's a very nice guy. He once interviewed me on his site, pretty much out of the blue. And Mortal Engines is very good.

How about Homunculus by James Blaylock and The Peshawar Lancers by SM Stirling? Homunculus is really pretty funny. Stirling's other stuff comes in for a lot of criticism, but The Peshawar Lancers is good.

Thanks for the recommendations, Toby!

Question: Is your Space Captain Smith series available in Asia? :)

My introduction to steampunk was Jeter's Farewell Horizontal. Quite short, but very enthralling.

I have just zoomed through the Parasol Protectorate series - Alexia Tarabotti is awesome and I rather liked Professor Lyall too hehe :D

I honestly don't know if it is available in Asia. I know they're available in Australia, if that helps. I can't see why they couldn't be ordered in. Is that any help?

I certainly haven't seen it around, which is why I asked. Australia does get a better range and supply of books than Malaysia does.

Looks like it's Book Depository for me...
