I read this trilogy when my daughter (age 11) recommended it. The next day we bought the next two books in the series. I think I read all three books in the series in a week.
The three books in the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins are book 1 The Hunger Games, book 2 Catching Fire and book 3 Mockingjay.
This book tells the story of Katniss Everdeen. Born into Panam, this is one possible Earth further where following a nuclear apocalypse, the world has shrunk to 12 regions dominated by the Capitol. The Regions provide the food and resources which the Capitol enjoys. The Capitol controls the regions through a cruel structure of oppression plus an annual demand for tribute, namely teenage contestants for the Hungers Games. A TV game show which crosses, the Fantastic Seven, with Mad Max and Britains Got Talent.
In Book 1 The Hunger Games Katniss Everdeen volunteers for the Hunger Games to spare her twelve year old sister Prim. This is unheard-of and most likely suicidal. The story then tells Katniss's story her departure for the capital and her fight for survival during the Hunger Games.
In Book 2. Catching Fire We see Katniss Everdeen as the unwilling victor of the Hunger Games, who unwittingly becomes the symbol for a growing resistance movement. In a move to silence Katniss and other victors are sent into the arena for another round of The Hunger Games.
In Book 3. Mockingjay Katniss Everdeen is the unwilling symbol of the resistance, but her concerns are focused on her family and her friends. The weakest of the three, this book still provides a satisfactory conclusion to the trilogy.
I highly recommend this book. It was the first YA post apocalyptic novel on which a whole genre has been built. It is beautifully written and absolutely un-put-downable.
