It would appear one as created a promotional video for this book. It is rather good in my opinion!

Roll on my invite to Hollywood :)

Cheers guys. Ratsy you did get the Eric Clapton soundtrack in Canada?

I love the background visuals. But one thing I learned after making several promotional videos myself (I should have figured it out sooner) is to keep it under one minute long.

Um, so - honestly? It felt like I was being told about the book and not shown what was so good. I watched the first minute or so and felt I hadn't gained anymore knowledge outside what the blurb had already told me (sorry.)

I watched this trailer recently and thought it was good and I'd like to read the book (I have it ordered)

That does make the book sound intriguing, springs. I'm off to take a look at it over on Amazon. I don't know yet if I'll buy it, but I am interested enough to investigate.

Absolutely. :)

It's always good to know what works for others/what other publishers are up to, surely.

It'd be easy to say something's fab even if I didn't think so - it would be like giving a false crit, though. Every opinion's useful, surely, especially those that challenge? :)

Most important thing on Joseph's video is he loves it and so do I.

How is that the most important thing? (Important, yes, but not the most important, or the only important.) Neither of you is a prospective customer for the book. You can't please everyone, true, but you want to draw in as many people as possible. It's a sales tool. Will potential readers watch it all the way to the end? I had to force myself to watch for even a whole minute. I'm not saying that it's bad, just too long and too slow to keep my interest.

Having done book trailers myself, I understand the temptation to tell as much as possible about the book, but I finally realized that is not a good idea. If I did a trailer for Goblin Moon now, it would be shorter than any of the others I've done. In fact, I would do a lot of things differently.

Of course if you ask a lot of people and you get an overwhelmingly positive reaction, then the reactions of a few people who think as springs and I do won't matter at all. But if there is a general consensus that it's not working, then surely you could come up with something else that you and Joseph both love that would work.

If the video has brought in 300 sales, then it looks like it is a very good sales tool. Although you might try a shorter version, too, and see if you can get even more sales. Nothing says you can only have one video at one length. Movies often have several trailers.

It does look good! Did you have to pay a royalty to use Eric Clapton? I'd go with Teresa's suggestion of trying shorter versions, but a) I'm a big Clapton fan and b) I'm somewhat invested in After Midnight the anthology... Wonder if the separate stories could each have their own trailer, then linked back to the main book? Whatever, it's a superb piece of work, especially for a first! Well done, that man.

'd go with Teresa's suggestion of trying shorter versions, but a) I'm a big Clapton fan

I think the success of this one would depend quite heavily on whether you like the music. If you're happy to listen to the track and have the visuals presented to you almost as a side-benefit (and I was, even though I wouldn't call myself a Clapton fan), then I think it could be rather effective as a selling tool. If you're not into the music, then I think it's waaay too slow. Probably it is worth making another, much faster one to complement it.

As far as the use of the music goes, there are loads of people using old tracks on YouTube without permissions as backing for their OVAs or whatever. But they're not using them for commercial purposes. I think unless you have permission (which I assume you haven't, because it would cost a bomb) this might be very dodgy ground. Though I suppose the worst that could realistically happen is that it would be pulled.
