I read the ice dragon awhile ago and believe it is westeros.

And believe the end battle will be Jon snow on the ice dragon vs dany

But it could be bran on the ice dragon, due to being told he will fly.

Has anyone else read it, what are your thoughts?:)

And, somehow, the crippled kid wins over the Targaryen.

Yes, it sounds lovely.

In my opinion, The Ice Dragon is a world apart from Westeros. There are similarities sure, but there are also dissimilarities.

Similarities consist of dragons, kingdoms, war, summers, winters, building snow castles, Beth, and Hal. These all show the humanity of the world. Cruelty, toil, nationalism, and games. Adara and her family come to life during the seasons, the trials, the heartbreaks, and joys of their lives. The names Beth and Hal occur. in ASOIAF, once and twice respectively... plus six other names that begin with Beth and seven others that begin with Hal.

Differences... ice lizards, dragon riders are not nobles, winters seem to come at least once a year or even more frequently, John, and the lack of the Wall. We've gotten a good amount of POV from Arya, Bran, Jon, Eddard, Catelyn, Sam, Tyrion, Theon, Asha, Will, and Varamyr about their lives in the North... Bran's story shows the supernatural while Jon's especially dealt with his life among the Wildlings and none of their accounts reveal the existence of ice lizards.

In ASOIAF, dragons seem to be the exclusive property of the Targaryen royal family. The World of Ice and Fire says that dragons were only used by the noblest of Valyrian families.

The winters in TID come frequently, but maybe this is just the perception of Adara.

TID also lacks any mention of the Wall. This could place the story well before the raising of the Wall, i.e. at least eight thousand years before Jon and Dany... but this explanation distances Adara from the Starks and all the people of Westeros whom we know.

Adara's father is John. John does not appear at all in ASOIAF, but the name Jon does. Twenty different characters bear this name... and seven others begin with Jon, while none begin with Joh.

From what we know right now, The Ice Dragon does not fit into ASOIAF... but GRRM could easily rememdy that if he chose. The Ice Dragon could be placed years and years before the raising of the Wall or even after ASOIAF. Some readers are convinced that the Targaryens put a dragon into the Wall.

Placing The Ice Dragon over eight thousand years before ASOIAF or hundreds of year after, distances the story so much that it is effectively a different world. I'll just continue to think of it as a stand alone story that influenced GRRM's epic.

Nice detailed analysis Boaz, i just realised it was first published in 1980, 16 years before game of thrones. Still curious that it was rereleased in 2014 though. Also the star Bran follows north is called the ice Dragon. I think an Ice Dragon could easily be brought into the plot. Which would fit in nicely with saying Bran would fly? Also I remember it being said that an ice dragon was four times (i think) the size of a fire breathing dragon. So one ice dragon against three fire dragons, seems like a great battle to end the series.

I'd forgotten the constellation... good job. I think GRRM could easily tie it in if he wants...

My opinion on the matter is that The Ice Dragon is a story within the story of aSoIaF. I Imagine the ice dragon would be one of the tales in Old Nan's repertoire. and to explain explain the difference in names (John vs. Jon) if you think about it, characters in stories always have weird names... Like Tyrion, and Jaime and Jon and Eddard.

Ice Dragon, at least as a term, has been used in aSoIaF. there is the star named the ice dragon and I think 1 or 2 characters mention Ice Dragons as a fable or folk lore.

Allegedly, Martin had stated that The Ice Dragon is entirely separated from ASOIAF somewhere on his blog. I've been digging for it, but can't find it.

As for ice dragons in ASOIAF world, WoIaF has mentions of them, but from descriptions and tales, they won't be ridden by anyone.

Bran said/thought he remembers the Ice Dragon among the stories old Nan told him, so the actual Ice Dragon book might be similar to said fable, which opens the possibility for the existence of ice dragons, but I would expect them to be quite different from what's in the story.

In "GRRM confirms that fans have guessed the ending" I mentioned my ideas on Ice Dragons. Gods I wish my Kindle would let me post a link!

I don't remember the exact passage, likely somewhere around the chapters for Ib.

It seems also to be that Ice Dragons have zero evidence about their actual existence as they melt when they supposedly die despite nobody ever claiming to have killed one and no legend of it actually being mentioned. While we have confirmations that dragons, others, giants, children, and other supernatural creatures exist, there is no such thing for ice dragons as there is no such confirmations making them much close to grumkins and snarks on the scale of probable existence.

"Sailors from half a hundred nations have glimpsed these great beasts over the centuries, so mayhaps there is some truth behind the tales." With GRRM where there is smoke, there is usually fire....

Usually doesn't mean always. Just noting that the things they had mentioned as ice dragons were never attributed by anyone as ice dragons. Unlike, the Others and children, they only exist in myths and legends.

Fair enough.

Apparently someone in Winds of Winter will be travelling to the land of always winter, so perhaps we shall see....

After re-reading Aegon's/griff/tyrions chapters again, I've now changed my mind about Aegon being fake. When Tyrion meets Aegon, he thinks something is odd straightaway, then when he plays cryvase with the halfmaester the secret is confirmed, but this conversation is off page. I think Tyrion already had his suspicions, to get the truth from the halfmaester. Also, it make alot of sense that varys was getting baby Aegon out of Kings landing during the sacking, we know what most people in kings landing were doing during the sack, but strangely not Varys the spider. The only reason for thinking he is fake comes from the fact he is with the bittersteel, golden company and Dany's fake dragon comment from Quaite.

So what does the fake dragon actually refer to then?
Ice dragon!
and Bran's, but you will fly, from what Ive read does not relate to him moving between trees etc, he just opens his eyes and he is there, he doesn't mention flying from one location to another.
Ice dragon, ice dragon, ice dragon!
