Has anyone had success getting their fantasy short (less than 7K words) published online or in a magazine?

I've had a few picked up by Heroic Fantasy Quarterly but I'm always looking for new outlets.

It could be useful to start a discussion of what people have done, where, how...etc.?

My main interest is apocalyptic fantasy, but it might be of interest to any fantasy or sci-fi writers to swap a few notes...

Duotrope is another good source of markets, but costs money to subscribe now. I had an 8k fantasy story published in Stupefying Stories last year, and found the owner good to deal with.

I've had one flash fiction piece (173 words) published. Found that market through the editor (sf writer Lou Antonelli) being a regular on Asimov's forum (in the grand old days when both Asimov's forum and Lou's online Sentinel Science Fiction zine existed).

The fact that Sentinel folded exactly 13 days after publishing my story mocking a certain Mr Dread Cthulhu is pure coincidence...

I also look at Ralan for markets.

You might also check this forum's Gary and his Tickety Boo press...

Thanks all! I will take a look at the grinder and Ralan.

I used to use Duotrope but (being tight!) I've also been put off by the subscription fee....

I had a longer story published by Damnation books (www.damnationbooks.com) in 2009. They were fine to deal with - and they paid! - although I notice more recently they have upset a few of their writers so it's probably advisable to be wary. They deal in horror mostly but darker Sci-fi and fantasy might be of interest...
