Graham Joyce, 1954-2014

Yes, very sad.

He was, I think, the guest of honour the only time I attended a FantasyCon (in 2002), when he told us what happened when his book, The Tooth Fairy was optioned for a film and the contract specified that he got to write the first two drafts of the script.

I love the fact that Graham was goalkeeper for the England Writers' Football Team. The resultant book, Simple Goalkeeping Made Spectacular, just shot to the top of my want list.

Very sad news. I met him (and went to a reading of Some Kind of Fairy tale) in Brighton FantasyCon, and he came over as funny, intelligent, and a writer whose craft was everything to him. Not obsessively bad, but obsessively good, and I brought the book, and had him sign it on the strength of his personality. He seemed relaxed and interested in people around him, not ego-driven in the slightest - he sat in the audience in many panels, rather than pontificating in the bar the whole time. A truly nice guy, who will be sadly missed.
