I can think of more then a few places that Ive encountered in the pages of the books that Ive read that I would love to be real places of which I could travel to . And character(s) that I wish were real people , with whom I could have an adventure or two with. Sometimes , I find myself wishing I could be part the action in the story , interacting with the characters , instead of being the spectator.

What are your choices ? What places in the realm of fiction, would you want most to be real places that you could go to? and what characters do you wish were real ?

Let the whimsy begin.:D

Riverworld. Not only is the concept cool, but if it were real I'd wake up there upon my death and be immortal. And apparently live shoulder to shoulder with cool famous people (hopefully not Goering). I hold out a sliver of hope that Farmer knew something we don't :D

Dorimare, the setting of Lud-in-the-Mist, by Hope Mirrlees. Not only is it the setting of one of my favorite books, and one of my favorite settings in itself, but it's one I actually would visit if I could. It's charming, whimsical, poignant, and (which is an important consideration) I would expect to get out alive.

Well, this is a humble wish, but I would love to live in Hobbiton...after that messy business with the ring and all! I'd have a little garden, and a cup of ale now and then. I'm 6'3" though...I'd need a larger-than-normal hole to live in!

I could see you in Hobbiton, CC. :)

I suppose Narnia is the obvious one for me. (I say obvious, the setting for Narnia comes from about 30 miles from where I live. Sadly the setting doesn't translate in full.) specifically, I like the sound of Care Paravel's pennisula.

Oh! A few more (then I'll be done!:)). I would love to live next to the forest where Totoro lives, in Miyazaki's My Neighbor Totoro, or in the spirit world from Miyazaki's Spirited Away (these from a 30-year love fest with Miyazaki's work).

Im not at all sure I could survive there, but I think I would like to explore and have an adventure in Westeros . Id love to meet the Starks, and Lanisters and all the rest. :)

Peter F Hamilton's Illuminatus, a forest planet covered in fluorescent vegetation that lights up at night.

Or the deep forest where Ashitaka glimpses the Forest God in Princess Mononoke, for me.

Or China Mieville's New Crobuzon, but I wouldn't want to stay there long.

PERN always and every time. I would get me a dragon or two and a host of fire lizards and some horses and would tour the world with massed creatures ;)

Another one up for a trip to Narnia. Do they do group rates? I'd quite like to visit Lothlorien, in Middle Earth. It sounds beautiful. And then maybe a few days in Rivendell afterwards.

I'd also come and join Kylara on her Pern tour - I'm assuming we'd go between Thread falls, though?

And I'd like to be a guest at the Hogwarts Halloween feast.

I have always felt that the Welsh Marches were pretty close to The Shire.

The problem is if you can get to Narnia, Ringworld, Landover, so can the tourists. At least those of us living in Europe ARE living in Middle Earth. Tolkien said so. Rivendell is some place in Switzerland.
Much as I liked the Narnia and Landover books, I'm not sure I'd like to visit. Well maybe Landover if there is no crisis. Ringworld sounds a little dangerous and overwhelming.
Co. Clare is pretty good and parts of Limerick, Kerry, Galway, Sligo, Antrim, Down, Mayo and Cork not bad. Can be expensive.

The Sunken City of R'Lyeh were Cthulu sleeps. in some stories is come to the surface mid ocean. Ih hate to run into that place.

They are. I live there! I was watching the Judi Dench 1992 documentary about Tolkien last night, and there is clearly a lot of Worcestershire/Herefordshire in the Shire. But, yes, the whole Marches area is very Shire-y. There's a place near Shrewsbury called The Cliffe, it and the hills around it are exceptionally Shire-like...
