Indeed Real Life (tm) often has stuff you'd be hard put to make up. The Chinese just recently searched about 10,000 pigeons. A Science Fiction Author founded a church to make money. The Galaxy has Neutron stars, apparently natural, but such a good Galactic 'GPS' we are starting to use them for navigation in the Solar system.
In a slightly similar vein to Teresa's article has been a BBC series (may not work in UK! try .co.uk instead of .com)
Unless you know what to look for these are hard to find... Stuff that if you made up, people would say "Unrealistic!"
I think all culled from 19th C. contemporary UK & USA newspapers.
