Thought I'd give this a try late last night. Ended up watching four episodes in a row. So far so good. It's like a combination of Gundam and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

I agree - NGE in spaaaaaace!

It's a shame the series is only twelve episodes long (although there is a second series on the way).

And is it linked to Knights of Cydonia by Muse? Can anyone solve a long standing family discussion? Because the Muse song links to futuristic knights on Mars which is vaguely similar? And, obviously, they're close in sound and spelling?

Cydonia is a region of Mars - especially focused on by the New Age movement as the site of an extinct "Martian civilisation", evidenced by "pyramids" and a "sphinx", if memory serves right.

I watched the 1st season on NF, & found it similar to Waterworld in that it hints of recycling certain people who either do not contribute to the cause or are just not up to whatever is expected of them. While I cannot say that it was ever expressed that such people would be killed and become plant food, etc., the idea seemed implied by what was said.

Anyway, I am eager to see the next season.

I'm not sure if it is really inspired from other works or history. Probably reading more into it than there is. Sidonia is the name of the colony ship they live on. Perhaps it's a chunk of Mars (it does look like a chunk of a planet adapted into a spaceship) and maybe that's the connection, but as far as I can remember the anime hasn't said where the name of the ship came from.

Anyway... Knights of Sidonia is a fantastic sci-fi anime that I strongly encourage everybody to watch. The CGI is done so well that after awhile you'll barely notice it is completely rendered in 3D. The mech fighting scenes are awesome, especially with the great sound effects and 3D lighting, and they aren't afraid of killing off characters. The world building is well done too.

It's currently running its second season.

NF original? You mean Netflix? They are deceiving people.

"Netflix Originals" are shows like Daredevil and Hemlock Grove. Those are shows that are financed by Netflix and created for them, treating Netflix as its own network station.

Knights of Sidonia (Sidonia no Kishi) is from Japan, created by Polygon Pictures and screened on Japanese TV networks by Sentai Filmworks. All Netflix did was purchase the license to release it for western audiences. Netflix didn't create it.

They won't have it until after it finishes its run in Japan. If you want to watch it before that you'll have to do a google search for the fansub release of it. A group called Underwater are translating it. I won't link it here because it falls into the same moral ambiguity as downloading tv shows from American networks so Brian wouldn't be happy with me if I did.

When I said it is currently running its second season, I meant it is currently on TV in Japan at the moment.

It's advertised as a Netflix original, in the same way Ricky Gervais' "Derek" was outside of the UK - Netflix don't make it, but they have exclusive distribution rights in the markets they operate within.

Thanks; I did know it was Japanese, just thought it ran at the same time.

Ive seen clips of it , it looks impressive.(y)

Was a really good season. Can't wait for them to make a 3rd -- Based on the way it ended it appears they at least hope to do a 3rd.

Began watching the first season to prepare for S2....then logged onto Netflix to see that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 was available. That means taking a small break from Sidonia.

Just received email from netflix, s2 now available. I will begin watching tonight!
