the french postcards from 1905 to 1925 were produced largely in a studio by jean angelou
these were mainly photographs of 'horizontal women' as the 'comfort' women of paris were known as upon the police registers.
the prostitutes used these postcards much as we would business cards. the name and place of residence or office was on the back of the card.
there were three famous "Fernande" 's that were photographed by J.A. studios. -miss fernande- fernande oliver (picasso's reputed lover) and the courtesan of a famous artist, fernande barrey.
another name for the french harem, was luna girl, some had nicknames like les cherries, or petit margot
other names i found were berry mary, and daily dolly.
there was a famous london brothel run by a madame of the name Mrs F.A.Tasse
however in the hidden world of rent boys and telegraph boys,
common names were molly, mary-ann, margery, and miss evaline, as well as the more expected nancy and pansy.
i have found out though that these were common sobriquets for female brothel workers before being transferred to use as a description for male sex workers.
an interesting thing is that some of the french postcards of 'women' were in fact of male transvestites. these can be discerned by the retouching of the adams apple to blend it into the photo, and the fact that they are generally more dressed.
another thing... many cities had a directory of prostitutes and brothels.
this was a blue book usually in the united states.
