I read a collection of futuristic short stories back in the late '90s, early 2000s. I think it was actually a children's book but the stories were creepy. One of the stories I remember involved a world in which trees, and therefore lumber, were scarce so a spray was developed to enable trees to grow much faster. The spray works too well and causes the trees to grow so quickly that they "scream" as they grow. Unfortunately the lumber these trees produce is useless and the trees are growing (and falling over) out of control. The most the people can do is outrun them. I think the narrator of this story is a young girl who can hear the trees screaming from her bedroom window.
In the second story scientists invent a drug that can make people immortal. A young man steals the drug from his mom (who helped develop the drug I think). The mom's butler tries to get it back but fails and as he is walking away from the young man, a piece of construction falls on the young man. The young man wakes up later to find himself crushed under this building but he cannot die since he took the drug.
I have been looking for this book for a few weeks and google has been of no use. If this sounds at all familiar please let me know. Thank you!
