Wandered over from http://freefall.purrsia.com where we are trying to track down a book based on some sketchy plot details. Here's what we know:
"It was a mudball planet with lots of sillicon and most of the metals trapped in the core with little plate techtonics. The planet took years to rotate and orbited a very luminencent star. The result was a rainforest that covered most of the planet. Even the shallow oceans had trees growing out of it. Because the planet took years to rotate, the far side was frozen and dead / dormant. When it thawed, a roaring forest fire that ran the length of the terminus burned up much of the smaller growth, allowing for new foliage to sprout. The Pmurri and other species were forced to migrate around the planet's warm side. Since they had no metals and no way to form foundations of a real civilization, the Pmurri were stuck at a neolithic state of development.
Humanity had hit a developmental snag as well. We'd exausted most of the researchable material in the worlds we'd colonized and were desperately searching for new fields for research and exploitation. The survey team came to this world looking for things, but also desperately seeking a world with an intelligence comperable to our own. Unfortunately while there wasn't much we could take from the Pmurri, we were their ticket to a better life."
The Pmurri? were a felinoid race who opted to become pets in exchange for a radical upgrade in their living conditions. The original poster thought the name of the book was Edgefire, but I have Googled exhaustively and come up with nothing.
Any ideas would be gratefully received. Oh, and I'm wearing my asbestos shorts, so if you feel like you have to flame the n00b, feel free.
