It has been over 15 years since I have read the book I am looking for, so I do not remember the title or author. The story is set in a future universe where thousands of alien races travel the galaxy and populate Earth, as well. Over the course of the story, a scientific expedition has discovered gigantic stones that are made of unknown material and seem to exist in multiple dimensions. Inside these stones are enormous slumbering demons. One of the main characters is a mercenary that accepts jobs to traverse unexplored worlds. He is hired on to explore the planet that the demons were discovered on. He keeps with him an illegal caterpillar-like creature that has formed a symbiotic/psychic link with him. After the main character sustains injuries or what-not it attaches to his spine and heals his pain, while also feeding on him somehow. At the end of the book, the demons are discovered inside the multidimensional stones leading into the next book in the series. Unfortunately, I never got a chance to read the second book in the series, and I do not have a copy of the first book at this current time. I do remember the cover art for the book. The cover had two enormous, translucent stones front-and-center, which you could see the demons encased in back-to-back. The demons were shades of purple and the stone was blue. The sun is setting in the background and there are spacecraft flying through the air. I hope my short description helps to find this book. I would really love to read this again.
