It's January! Happy New Year, everyone. What are you reading?

Happy New Year, Hex!

I've just finished Maureen Johnson's The Madness Underneath in one sitting.

Almost done with Simon R. Green's 12th and final Nightside novel (The Bride Wore Black Leather).

Just started Benedict Jacka's Hidden - the latest installment in the Alex Verus series and Shirley Jackson's The Haunting Of Hill House.

It depends on what you mean by "What are you reading?"

I'm engaged right now in Geyer's Guerrilla Prince (about Fidel Castro), Barfield's History in English Words, Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors, Bellaris's The Spell of the Sorcerer's Skull, Haggard's Pearl Maiden (a romance of the AD 70 Fall of Jerusalem by the author of King Solomon's Mines and She), and a story in Clifford Simak's Strangers in the Universe. But I compiled a list of books I could be said to be reading now, and it comes to 39 items, including story collections by Robert Louis Stevenson and Jorge Luis Borges, biographies of Edmund Spenser and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, histories of Byzantium and the World War 2 era dictators, etc. As I start a new year, I'm thankful for so much to read that is worthwhile.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through Lock In by John Scalzi, and it is a great read so far.

Still Good Omens. And I'm apparently 46% of the way through.

I'm about half way through Marina by Zafon. Too mny parties have slowed progress. I have another Zafon after and a story-of-Robin-of-Sherwood to plough through. (The first Robin, volume one, only. Mr Springs knows me well.... :D)

Electric Eden by Rob Young. Fascinating exploration of the development of British folk music up to the electric acid folk rock of the late 60s-early 70s, which is possibly the only musical genre less cool than prog rock. I am up to about 1963 so far. A surprising amount relevant to some recent threads here.

just finishing with the first three volumes of anihillation by saxon andrew. a little bit utopic but nice read :)

I finished Lock In by Scalzi and loved it. Great stuff by my new go to SciFi author.

Since I've been enjoying the SciFi side of things, I decided to break my new Kindle in with our own Ralph Kern's Endeavour. I am 9% through it and am thoroughly enjoying it.

The Perfect King, a biography of Edward III. Bit modern for me (although I'm also reading Caesar's War Commentaries).

Edited extra bit: apparently being a writer doesn't necessarily mean you can spell 'me' correctly [more*, somehow].

Struggling a bit with Awaken. It has a nice future/ slightly dystopian setting, and I liked the set up and the characters, but there are these weird kind of Thunderbirds technology bits -- like a car that flies and then turns into a submarine -- that feel a bit silly. And the central relationship isn't working very well for me. I don't have enough sympathy for the mc. Anyway, I'm about 75% of the way through, and it's feeling too long.

Concurrently re-reading Journey to Altmortis, reading Sir Edric's Temple and beta reading Kingdom Asunder, all by our very own @thaddeus6th

Note to self: must widen range of reading material....

I have a stack of books next to the bed, but it's so much easier to read from my phone propped sideways on the bedside table because when I nod off I don't lose my page. I love the feel and smell of a physical book, but find myself reading electronically more and more.

Must you, Kerry? Sounds like you have exquisite taste already ;)

Going through some old books. Currently re-reading Robert Silverberg's Across A Billion Years
