Looking for a sci fi fantasy book about a hidden world under a mirage.

The book is called something like 'Mirage over the Abyss', or something with Abyss in it anyway. It is a story about a whole community hidden in an abyss that is covered by a mirage. The world below doesn't know that there is anything other than their world, except the rulers and the witch until mysterious travellers arrive and everything changes. One of the travellers is the re-incarnation of the rightful King and soon chaos ensues. There is violence, sex, witchcraft and human sacrifice to the 12 tentacled Kraken.
If anyone has any idea I would love to find the book again.

I've not read the book, but it sounds like: Dwellers in the Mirage by Abraham Merritt.

I was going to suggest A. Merritt but could not remember which one.
Dwellers in the Mirage is the one.

I also noticed that his books are on kindle and since I lost track of my copies I just might be tempted.
