Do I Need Prior Knowledge For This Star Trek Book?

A while ago I bought a Star Trek Book but have held off on reading it until I gain more knowledge from the TV shows or movies.

So my question is do I need to read 1-4 first or watch the show or movie or gain more knowledge in general
within Star Trek?

I suspect you'll get a lot more from the story if you're already familiar with Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series. You wouldn't need to watch all of the episodes, nor all the NextGen films.

I've only read a few Star Trek books - from the Original Series - and they were always standalone stories, pretty much like the TV episodes. I would presume the same for the NextGen books, though I'm happy to be corrected if anyone who has read any can comment?
