blah - flags. So many flags.
I've been following this bid for a wee while (obviously, given where I live) and it's gathering a bit of momentum. They'll be publishing up and coming writers (with an Irish link, either in the story or the location of the writers), and I think they're going to use some of my stuff, so I'll link to that as and when. :)
But I thought the bid would be of interest to some of the Chronners given Dublin's only a hop and skip on a plane for the UK based Chronners (and, who knows, any further afield who'd love to see the Emerald Isle) Suffice to say, if it's happening, I'll be there, and I'm going to cheerlead the bid along.

So, they're on twitter at
@Dublin2019

And facebook: Dublin2019

They seem to be off to a good start; at the convention I went to this weekend they were the only '19 bidders present. There were 3 or 4 '17 bidders present with tables, but since Dublin were the only ones for '19 they got lots of attention. And the convention space looks lovely!

It really does, doesn't it? And apparently Shamroken, the Eurocon from last year, went well, so hopefully that gives them the history to impress. And there is nowhere, really almost nowhere, better than Dublin for a bit of craic and a weekend away. Plus, of course, it's only about 150 miles away from GOT land, with all the sets and what not in kicking distance, so a really nice sff setting these days. :)

You could come and visit us all, Juliana.

At the moment, there are two flights each way between here and Dublin (which appeared to be a lovely city when I've visited -- sadly, very briefly, and on business -- on a couple of occasions almost 15 years ago), but who knows what the situation will be in 2019. (I doubt the airlines do, but there must be a reasonable level of traffic given how long the two places have been linked by direct flights, so fingers crossed.)

There are also direct flights into Belfast and an easy road to Dublin with regular bus links and talk of the train starting to stop at the airport. :) Lots of options. I really, really hope it wins - not having to travel to a con would be such a luxury*

(*although I'm far enough away, I probably would stay over. I'm about 2 hours from Dublin, each way.)

Ooh, exciting. It could be my first con.

Except for Q-Con, of course *cough* where I will be supporting my friend at her book launch. :D

If you have the lowdown on it, could you send, Kerry? I might have a look at it. :)

That would be terrific! Flight from Gatwick, 4 minutes away, and where's the Guinness factory, again?

Near enough we'd get you back to the hotel from it. :D Or, given Dublin, maybe just into a different bar...

It's a really good space opera with sexy pilots, or so I'm told. I should read it, if I were you. :p Duh!!!!!

Ulp. I haven't booked Q-con, but Stuart mentioned it as worth a look. Better have a look at it... :)

(Is it comic con you're thinking of? I'll be at that one, hijacking any cosplayers in sexy flight outfits. Any sex, creed and colour... :D)

Thanks for sharing this. Worldcon Dublin would be amazing. The air fare over to the US is quite dear.

A quick update to this. We're still waiting on the voting for 2019 which takes place in Helsinki over the summer, but Dublin is unopposed so crossing everything!

What has been announced today is that Titancon in Belfast - a great wee con, one of the nicest ones I know - will host the Eurocon for 2019. This is a week away from the proposed date of the Worldcon. Once we know the full picture I'll start a new thread for the two events - and hopefully some of you will get a plane ticket and come over, maybe for both. Did I mention that Ireland, both North and South is a cracking holiday destination? And that the Chronners over here would love to meet anyone who comes over and will make you all as welcome as can be. :D

While there are still no flights from the local airport to Dublin, it seems that there are flights from Southampton Airport** to both Dublin and Belfast.

I'll have to get a passport*** -- if I get my finger out, I can still have a burgundy one -- and, possibly (these events are being held after the end of March 2019), a visa.

** - It's a shame Southampton Airport is so far away from where I live (about 35 miles by road, not all of it motorway and dual carriageways) and there's only the one rail link from here, with all the bother of having to use the station (on the mainline up to London) built right next to the airport. I'm not Marco Polo...! ;)

*** - I wouldn't be at all surprised if one was required, even now, for travelling by air to Belfast. (Airlines have been known to ask for them for journeys wholly within Great Britain.)

@Ursa major - just to say you don't need a passport if you fly into Belfast :) I haven't had one in 20 years and fly back and forth. And it isn't needed to travel from Belfast - Dublin.

On links - there is a train between both cities which takes a couple of hours
