I just saw a brief mention on AWOIAF about rumours of a cadet branch of House Stark living in White Harbour.

Frankly, if Martin is indeed going to wrap up by the end of book 7 then it's more than a little late in the day to be introducing them now.

However, IF they are introduced (it would need to be near enough immediately in book 5!) then first of all I think it spell out a death sentence for poor little Rickon. Secondly I think the eldest son of the eldest son of this branch will immediately be marriage material for Sansa. Thirdly, looking at the Stark family tree, they must be descendants of Artos Stark.

Any thoughts?

The karstarks are there as well. So the bloodline ain't as close to gone as it is with the arryns.

Where in AWOIAF did it mention about a cadet branch of the Starks?

It mentions a cadet branch, the Greystarks, who were either destroyed during rebellion or formed part of House Bolton.

when googled, what i got was that House Greystark ruled the wolf's den. When they joined Bolton in rebellion they were wiped out. The Boltons somehow survived. Since this seemed to have happened before the Manderly's came and made it into White Harbour, and the last Bolton rebellion before the ones in the book was quite some time ago. The Greystarks have been non-existant for thousands of years when considering the current timeline.

OK, it's under the subheading 'City', last sentence of the short paragraph. It does say that the source for that is semi canonical, although (I could be wrong) I do seem to remember Catalyn thinking about it at some point, I think in Storm of Swords.

Catelyn mentioned a couple of other possible heirs so Robb wouldn't make Jon his heir. I'm not sure if she mentioned the greystarks. She mentioned a couple of people in the vale. Like a niece of a niece stuff.

No, these aren't the Greystarks, they were wiped out centuries ago, these are people who would probably call themselves the Starks of White Harbour or the Starks of Barrowton.

Did you just invent those Starks? or is it just that those connected Houses to said places once married a female stark? I think the one from barrowtown, it's current lady, wanted to marry Brandon, even gave up her maidenhood to him. But he was betrothed to catelyn instead. So to find Stark blood, we'd have to go even further back for barrowtown. As for White Harbour, Can't figure out the last connection between Manderly's and house Strak qua marriage alliances.

From Wiki of Ice and Fire: "According to a semi-canon source, there may be a cadet branch of the Starks in the city." This is on the White Harbour page and the Barrowton page. I am speculating that they may be descendents of Artos Stark since it appears that he was the last Stark younger brother to sire sons.

hmm, k. Strange that Catelyn didn't mention them then. Or did she?

Exactly!

But then again, maybe she didn't know. Maybe Ned just never got around to mentioning that he's got distant cousins in White Harbour and Barrowton...

I've pondered this throughout today and I think if they were going to be introduced they would have been by now.

It would be kinda cool though....

Maybe Mr Stark of White Harbour/ Barrowton will turn up in Stannis' army as Stannis' candidate for Lord of the North...

Interesting.
In the Vale of Arryn, Littlefinger specifically mentions there is several different branches of Arryns, "proud but poor, except the Gulltown Arryns who married into merchants".
When Catelyn talks about other possible heirs to Robb, she talks about there being no immediate relations. Other then possibly in the Vale. I would think that if there were closer relations in White Harbour, Ned would have mentioned them.
I do find it interesting that Black Donnel and Artos Flint have been mentioned. Add to this, the maternal Grandmother who was a Flint, who probably passed on the "warging" that Brandon does. Lastly the mention of Artos, the Implaccable, Stark, and possible Stark childeren.......
