Star Trek.com reported the news earlier today.
Grace Lee Whitney
She actually died on Friday, but it looks like the reports are coming through today.
Rand was never one of the main characters of the original series, but it felt as though she was always there, handing the little black pad to Kirk for him to sign off on.
She had the much typical crush on the Captain, but was rarely any more than a little more than a young woman in a short skirt, shot in soft focus.
She returned in The Motion Picture where she had been promoted and was working in the transport room. Unfortunately while operating the transporter it suffered a major malfunction that led to the death of two key Enterprise crew members. In probably one of the few standout scenes for me, Kirk embraces her and ensures her it was not her fault.
For me though, her greatest appearance as Rand, and probably Whitney's best performance comes in STIII as the Enterprise returns to Spacedock. The look on her face as she sees the ship limp home covered in the scars of it's near fatal battle with Khan says more than words.
