I've just started reading Book 1 (A Game of Thrones) of A Song Of Ice and Fire series and I'm already hooked! I'm about 200 pages in after starting it about last week and I can't put it down.

So how long did it take for all of you to get hooked? (I'm a first time reader of this series so sorry if I'm confused and ask questions!)

About an hour. I picked it up when the first series was about to broadcast (or was it not long after? I don't remember now) to see what the fuss was about and yeah, I was hooked within an hour!

I was hooked a lot more quicker than that. From the moment I finished reading the prologue I knew I was going to be hooked just because of how he detailed the beheading. It was so realistic and grotesque.

I realised it was good when Bran described why, in the the North, the Lords carry out their own executions. But at that point I was still hedging my bets (I've read far too much that didn't impress me!) But yeah, a couple of chapters later I was utterly hooked!

The prologue really. By the end of it, I was hooked. It was just so intense. Then again, I wasn't even 14 back then. XD The Others seemed so scary because of the laughter as they were slaughtering Waymar Royce and I just wanted to know what will happen next with them and if anyone there will make it. My head was spinning with questions and mind you, prior to that, practically only fantasy I read was Harry Potter and The Hobbit.

I actually watched the first season before picking up a book so maybe I was hooked even before I started reading?

Once I did start reading it, I knew right away that I was going to enjoy it. I already liked the story (from the Show) but the books were just so much more detailed and the Characters are so fantastic.

Yes that was similar to me. I only watched like five episodes of the series as my brother has seasons 1 to three. I was so confused and had to stop when I found out it was a book series based in my favourite genre. So I just had to put a hold on the series until I brought the first book - finally I did it! I was hooked from the prologue and am now buying the first season of Game of Thrones!

Yeah that is what I love about this book series - intensity at its finest! I take an hour and a bit train ride to Uni so I'm always reading it to and from Uni all throughout the trainride. I've never done that before with another book!

It was the prologue for me as well. After chapter three though, that's when I knew I was going to lose sleep in favor of reading.

Halfway through the prologue. Book 5 had just come out and I tore through them all in a month...
Wow, I'm not even half way through the first book and I've been readinf it for almost month. Luckily though there's another four books to look forward to!

yup, 4 more long books. And if you are like me, and pretty much only read while in transit or on your lunch break, that can mean a few more months of reading the same story, which seems like a long time, but it is not long enough. I've read the series 3 times so far and as long as it takes me to get through all of them, it still ends too soon.

I NEED the 6th book to come out. going through withdrawals. need to start read through #4 I guess.

Arsten- good luck with that. I always find it somewhat tedious, getting through AFFC, mostly because I'm not the biggest Greyjoy fan, and all their family squabbles get old fast, imo.

Mark778- keep plowing through. It's 100% worth it!

Srylanna, if it's cool with you, okay if I join as well? I've been meaning to do a reread for a while, and have admittedly procrastinated.

I think I'm going to hold off re-reading until I hear a date set for tWoW. Want to re read it as a lead-up to reading the 6th book and I am hoping that there won't be enough time for me to read it twice before that happens.

To clarify, I definitely COULD re-read the whole series, probably several times, before I expect the next installment, but historically I have waited about 18 months between re-reads.

Mark, Welcome to the Chrons!

Personally, I was mesmerized by the defenestration, but I was hooked at... well, I'm not going to say because I don't want to spoil it for anyone.

I'm glad you're excited about the story! I'm glad you're reading like crazy. I don't want to rain on your parade... but let me add a couple of caveats...

First, beware even reading the names of threads in this forum! Thread titles can give away major plot developments. Avoid any and all threads that have the words "spoiler", "beware", or "theory" in the title. Many of us have read all five books to date and often mention things that you should not know. You should enjoy your own first impressions rather than just start believing our wacky theories. Some readers take the story at face value... and some do not. Read the story and make up your own mind before you begin to delve into the loonier posts... This link is to a thread that backs up my point.

WARNING! This board is full of spoilers!!

Second, don't get so hooked that you neglect your school work.

Third, enjoy the story. Savor it. ArstenWhitebeard mentioned in the above post that it takes a while for Mr. Martin to finish a book. I read AGOT and ACOK in September 2000. I only had to wait two months for ASOS. Since then, I've waited fourteen years and five months... for AFFC, ADWD, and now TWOW which will hopefully arrive in bookstores in 2016... but you never know. So enjoy the ride! Don't get caught up with the impatient jerks living on vitriol and venom.

Fourth, don't neglect your studies.

Fifth, do not shirk your homework.

And let me also state that the first five threads in the GRRM forum should be safe for you for you to read. Ursa started threads for each book that are supposed to be spoiler free, eg. without reference to further books in the series.

A Game of Thrones - NO SPOILERS PLEASE

And by the way... please do not click on any threads titles that resemble a mathematical equation.
