Looking for a space opera similar to BSG

Hello folks!

I am trying to find a good book or series of books similar to Battlestar Galactica or the Halo book series. Namely, I am looking for something that covers the struggles of humanity (or another race) as they fight to either stop or escape the pending destruction of their people. BSG had the Cylons, Halo had the Covenant, etc. Does anyone happen to have any books that might fit this or something close to this?

I had posted on a different forum yesterday (before I found this one) and a few suggestions came up on there:

  • The Revelation Space books, by Alastair Reynolds
  • Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained by Peter Hamilton
  • Man-Kzin Wars, multiple authors

Thanks in advance!

Can't think of anything off the top of my head. However, I'll move this over to General Book Discussion, where the more learned members hang out and will doubtless be happy to give plenty of recommendations. (Book Search is really for asking for help when searching for a book one can only recall in part so the title/plot/author need to be filled in.)

Saberhagen's Berserker series has a theme rather like this. Also the trilogy starting with Mutineer's Moon.

The Killing Star by George Zebrowski and Charles Pellegreno

I agree with the Hamilton recommendation. Some of the Warhammer series too, maybe.

The Lost Fleet series: Jack Campbell
In Death Ground/Shiva Option: David Weber
The Fear Trilogy: Stephen Moss

Although I haven't read them, the synopsis of pretty much any Chris Nuttall book.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I will be checking those out since I am almost done with the book series I am reading and will need something else to help make the public transportation ride to work less boring :) Below I have compiled all of the suggestions into a list to make things easier in case any other folks come up with other ideas:
  • The Revelation Space books, by Alastair Reynolds
  • Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained by Peter Hamilton
  • Man-Kzin Wars, multiple authors
  • Berserker series by Fred Saberhagen
  • Dahak trilogy by David Webber
  • The Killing Star by George Zebrowski and Charles Pellegreno
  • Warhammer series
  • The Lost Fleet series: Jack Campbell
  • In Death Ground/Shiva Option: David Weber
  • The Fear Trilogy: Stephen Moss
  • Galactic Center Saga by Gregory Benford
  • Gap Cycle series by Stephen R. Donaldson

I will add The Lost Fleet by Jack Campbell.

It has a number of similarities to Galactica, including a fleet stuck without any support deep behind enemy lines and a legendary commander coming out of nowhere to save it.

Two series come to mind:

Kevin J Anderson Saga of Seven Suns - This is a seven book series that could have been a lot shorter. I found it enjoyable though.
Michael Cobleys Humanitys Fire trilogy - 3 books so not a massive time investment.

Both involve humanity fighting for survival against the odds. Big scope space opera.
