Grimm: 2.22: Goodnight, Sweet Grimm

HOLY CRAP!!!!!

Did anyone else see the finale and that HUGE cliff-hanger they left us with?!

Huge cliffhanger they sure know how to make us wanting more. It was a really good ep all the way through and it was fun seeing Juliette making newbie mistakes when she joined Nick in Grimm case.

That royal prince was really smart, creating all the havoc, chaos just to get hold of Nick. I wonder why he wants Nick so bad. It cant be just the key, must be a part of a bigger game.

I did like their little cliffhanger jab ("Come on you had to see this coming"), but I really don't want to wait till the fall! GRRR!!! I thought it was a good ep, but I was getting a little ticked off at the way Juliette was kind of all of a sudden on board with all of this. I get that she thinks she has to make up, but really? Does she have to ask what kind of Wessen he is?

Eric's got something up his sleeve, and I think while the key is tied into it somehow, it's more about getting a Grimm on their side. Although how he thinks that's going to work since he's kidnapping Nick is beyond me. I'm praying that Renard intercepts him though. When Eric left, Renard was sitting in his car watching so I'm hoping that he followed them and will manage to save Nick.

We can now see the whole season's ratings in review. When they did the Olympic stuff (man, that seems like a decade ago) it helped Grimm out at first, (2.0) but the ratings slid (quickly down to 1.5) and going back to Friday barely helped (1.6) and then the season fluctuated between 1.3 and 2.0, hitting its season low at the last Friday before the move skyrocketed it back up to 1.9, just a tenth off its season high. But then it started sliding back down to 1.7 and that's what the finale got. Obviously, Grimm's been renewed for next year and these are good numbers for NBC at all and especially for Friday but I don't know if it's good enough to get it off of Fridays. I want to tell NBC to leave it alone but every time they move it, it seems to help or, at least, not hurt.

Anyway - as far as the substance of the finale, I don't like that Juliette goes from amnesiac to gung-ho Scooby Gang member to basically just shrieking in useless panic. I wish she'd sort of get back to how she was in "Plumed Serpent" - some even keel, anyway.

And I don't like that Nick seems to like people spitting in his face. They spent the whole episode talking about what an awesome Grimm he is, taking out these soldiers of fortune and these bounty hunters and these scary freaky dudes, only to have some schmuck spit in his face again, just like in that "Mr. Sandman" ep. Neither of these minor Bads strikes me as being particularly impressive warriors but... they spit! So awesome Nick there, instead of sending a bunch of dudes' heads back in the mail, just lets himself get spit on and collapses.

They've gotta get their power hierarchy right. The Wesen pecking order (or Nicking order) makes no sense.

Also, pretty unfortunate that Hank had a little real life problem - the show felt off with him there-but-not like he was.

Anyway - I still enjoy lots of parts of the episodes and sometimes entire episodes and I still feel like the show's got a chance to get really good but this season was mostly kind of stuck in the mud (except the better Renard/Adelinde movements). Here's looking forward to next season!

One of the things that sometimes bugs me about the current spate of hour long dramas on TV is that they don't seem to be able to get through an episode without having a secondary story woven in. Sometimes it's okay. But often it is an annoying distraction. I think Grimm would be well served to start off the next season with a couple of episodes devoted entirely to the main facets of the story, i.e., the big conflict among the royals and how it impacts Nick (& his Mom) and vice versa. Go ahead and put Juliette on the back burner if needed in order to accomplish this.

But will they listen to me? Not likely.

I enjoy Grimm for what it is. One of the techniques they use though (which more and more shows are doing it seems) is that the beginning few and the last few episodes are where the real meat of the storytelling is. In between is the lower budget Vessen-of-the-week kind of program.

It is done this way for a lot of reasons. Budget being probably the most relevant. One only has so much money to film a season, and if you want to pull out all the stops in a few episodes, you have to make other episodes on a much tighter budget.

Some shows do a better job at spreading out the wealth better than others thru-out the season. Grimm is one of the worst though. One could practically watch the first and last few episodes and see everything of any real importance that happened that entire season.
