Dark Truth
Lindsay McKenna
Silhouette, Nocturne, July 2007, $5.25, 305 pp.
ISBN: 0373617674
Ana Elena Rafael travels to Peru to visit the orphanage where she spent years. She hopes to find out her origins. For years she was having dreams of jaguars and a man with a beard who is trying to kill her. On the plane she meets Mason Ridfort who rescues her from being trampled. She feels a powerful attraction to him, but tries to hide it. She is more right than she knows because he is a Warrior of the light, born and bred to kill the Daughter of Darkness and her father the Darklord.
Mace sees the Tupay symbol on her neck, beings who use the dark forces to get what they want but he senses an inner purity from her that confuses him and stays his hand from doing his duty. He learns she was raised by a jaguar until she was taken in by a farmer whose wife saw the Tupay mark. She thought the child was evil and sent her to the orphanage but Ana doesn’t believe she is evil and when her father comes to her in dreams when he travels by astral projection she rejects him. She then travels through the portal to another plane and visits the Village of the Clouds where she learns her true history. When the Dark Lord tries to kill her, only her love for Mace may save her if she believes in his feelings too.
Both protagonists are shapeshifters who turn into the jaguars, animals who are allied with the warrior of the light. The metaphysical world that haunts Ana as she plunges into that surreal place seems genuine and readers will believe this is happening to the beleaguered heroine, who instinctively rejects its lure until she understands why she wears the Tupay mark. Mace is a straightforward strong willed person who is totally befuddled by the woman he was taught to hate yet feels that she is not evil as he learned she would be. DARK TRUTH is a magical tale that showcases how talented Lindsay McKenna is.
