Enough psilliness . . .

From now until August 1, post your requests for what kind of story you would like to receive.

I'll try to send out the requests at random soon after that (or maybe earlier, if the requests die out sooner.)

August and September are devoted to writing the stories.

Stories should be sent to me by October 1. (Earlier is better.)

For those of you who are utterly confused by what I am talking about, here (courtesy of Phyrebrat) are the "rules." (Nothing too formal about any of this.)

There is a sign-up thread for interested parties, with a deadline .

You request a story that you would like to receive. This can be as general as 'I'd like a space opera' or as obscure as 'I'd like a story featuring herbs, particularly hemlock and lemon verbena, an MC who lost his or her little finger in the Boer War, and is trying to move a stone circle from Ireland to Africa...'

The Admin of the challenge will then allocate your request to another entrant who will write it anonymously.

You then have until the deadline (normally around 6-8 weeks from close of sign-up) to write for your recipient.

There is no word limit as such, but aiming for 1k-10k words would seem reasonable.

Whilst the pieces do not appear in their entirety on the forum, and so writing standards are a little more relaxed it is polite to assure that at least an excerpt worth be family friendly, with no determined pornography, excessive delectation in torture or unacceptable language. If the full length version is to be attached, this holds for the submission as a whole

When you've finished your story, you send it to the admin (in this case Victoria) and she will pass it on to your recipient so they do not know who wrote it.

When all stories have been submitted, the Admin will post excerpts in a guessing thread and we will try and guess who wrote which one - it is a fun exercise identifying chron members' voices in their writing.

After a week or so of guessing, Admin reveals who wrote which story.

After the revelation of the authors, there can be a decision by the persons involved - (s)he by whom and (s)he for whom the piece has been written and the full length text can be attached.

That looks daunting, but it's really simple enough. I'll try to answer any questions.

Depending on what number of participants works out the best, I may or may not have a request myself, and may or may not write one of the stories requested.

I would like some kind of punkish type tale featuring at least one mention of a cat in one form or another, that enjoys cinnamon and milk in one form or another. The cat can be animatronic, robotic, demonic, vampiric, angelic, ghostly, hallucinogenic, catwoman, neko, or even just pictured in an advert at a space port in passing. (But there has to be at least one meow, real or imaginary).

There. Now every request after this will look comparitively easy and relatively sane in juxtaposition. :D Lead on MacDuff!

rwq??? (recreational water quality? reading and writing quarterly? runners world quieted? those selfie blogger pics? Makes Homer Simpson sound of miscomprehension... wait wait, requested - writing... almost got it. DOH! Goes and looks up 'q' words in the dictionary) Did you want a sample of my writing to see if its up to steam, first?

The "rwq" thing was when I made a typo and hit "post," then had to go back and edit it.

No sample is required. This is strictly for fun.

could I get a story featuring food, with an Arabian Nights type flavour? the story, not the food, or maybe the food, whatever.

#amidoingthisright

Offhand... Dinosaurs, in ancient dinosaur times, doing real dinosaur stuff and trying to catch the timetraveller humans.
this sounds like a job for DEO the dino maniac.. :D wonder if he would be up for it this time.??

(robert, sorrys, i thought you were gonna post my mess of a story. my tablet doesn't upload. had to pretzle-lize myself to get it to phyrebrat to begin with. )

( could i get a teeny story about fire?)
(goes away looking all bendy and salty..)

Maybe set in Dino-POV. They could get quite clever you know... and they had millions of years to wise up, figure out how to do stuff. They could... start avalanches, set traps, form unions - all kinds of semi-intelligent behavior. So we see the humans as snacks, nothing more, in DinoPov. How the humans got there, what happens to them, that's the story.

Hmmmm...

I think I'd like something involving an occult conspiracy, shady Governments and glamorous international locations.
And an MC I can believe in, Goddammit! :D

EDIT: Victoria, where are the rules for the Psekrit Pstuff? Is there a word limit?

No no! There's no limits! (Though a novel would be overdoing it)

I would like a story set in a post-apocalyptic but non-authoritarian dystopia. (i.e. more Fallout than Hunger Games, as reference points only)

You're right, I was! Sorry! I shall do it!

Also, not a mess, excellent.

goes and stands in naughty corner..

bad me..

No worries. The way in which I had to think very carefully in order to use "hallucinatory marshmallows" in a plausible way led to me writing a story that was better than if I had not had such a challenging and interesting request. So, thank you for that!

No "rules" really but there seems to be general agreement that 1000 to 10,000 words is reasonable. An excerpt from a longer work is fine.

Okay I'm in! Since there are two months to write it, I figure I can do this

I would like a horror story set on a small island in the middle of the ocean.

Nice suggestions so far!

I would like a story about aliens living among us who are completely unrecognizable as aliens until someone begins to notice something different about them, leading to a quest to find out who they were and what their intentions were.

Really? Another conspiracy story? You've got to be kidding! Ah, but I want a fresh take on the theme. There's the challenge!

There are so many great requests so far that I can't resist sticking my toes back in! Let me see now, I think I want a story about a guy who goes to his bank vault (safe deposit box) every day, and what that's about. (I actually have this on my list of things to write, but I may never get around to it, and besides, yours won't be the same story as mine. Whatever mine will be.)

I'd like: soft sci-fi, time travel, set in space, Fermi paradox, at least one character an intelligent robot.

1-2k words would be more than enough for me since I know we're all busy here, but if you have inspiration and spare time on your hands, knock yourself out :)
