I started reading this book back in '04, I don't think I ever finished it and for some reason it's been slowly eating at me to finish it. The cover art at the time looked older to me (80s or thereabouts). The plot goes something like this…It starts out with a brother and sister in a settlement of humanity (not sure if it was in our solar system or some other), the brother ends up being the main character in this book. He has a bad habit of getting into fights with guys usually bigger and stronger than him to protect his older and apparently hotter sister. The sister has this cool little self defense weapon that she won somewhere called a finger whip, like a coil of super fine wire around her finger with a metal hook on the end that she helped her brother fight some of these thugs with. I think their father was a scientist of some sort and one day something happened, or he heard of something that was going to happen and he tried to get spots on a transport ship heading for a new settlement for him and his family. They jumped in a lunar vehicle and were racing away from the city but someone (I think with some influence, or maybe trying to get the tickets for the transport ship) was after them, they had to dodge something like mines or mortars to get to the launch pad. I think their vehicle got hit, or the kids dad acted as a distraction to make sure the kids got to the ship safely. The brother and the sister made it without their father and successfully got launched into space. The more I think about this ship the more I think it was just a ploy to reduce the population of the settlement without causing unrest, because this ship if I remember right didn't have any officers on it that knew how to fly it. The brother still had to protect the sister but I think he ended up being a leader on this ship. They also meet another strange character on this ship, a girl dressed as a guy for her own protection. This girl acting like a boy and befriended the main character and eventually revealed to him that she was in fact a girl. After I don't know how long, they came into contact with space pirates who made life hell for the people on this ship, I think the sister got take and the brother tried to protect her but got beat up by the pirate leader. The way they got rid of the pirates was to put on spacesuits and depressurize the ship. I think the brother was on a quest to find his sister who was taken by the pirates.
