I got interest in fungi because of very interesting discoveries,the past ten years or so.Some excellently preserved fungi have been found.
e.g.Dorfelt in PALAEONTOLOGY 49/5:Protophysarum in eocene Amber(free access,BTW)
You might already know some or all of this.
Anyway Google either eg Klymiuk space PDF,to give you an inkling,or Michael Krings space PDF
