Finally, what’s the one thing you wish someone had told you about the realities of writing before you started out?

Writing is like chess, in that you have perfect control of it. There’s no chance involved. Publishing is like poker. You can learn how to play and bend your odds one way or the other, but luck is always going to be a huge factor. Don’t take the failures personally, just get another chip on the board.
