Hi everyone. Long time follower and I posted a bit a while ago but misplaced my account details...anyway...

Read a book a few years ago that I can't remember the author for. I assure you this is not the ramblings of a mad man...

The premise was a group of brothers / sisters lived in a house / castle in their own world. They had the ability to change plains effectively and live in different times / places in different worlds. They were always at each others throats (literally trying to kill each other) to be king/queen or in charge of something. They spot a unicorn in the woods a couple of times and there are a few battles, one eventually being on their front door.
One of the brothers (main character I think), get's captured at one point, blinded and put in prison. He eventually heals, draws a picture on a wall then walks through it and ends up on a beach near a light house (nuts, huh?).

Can't remember the name of anything but one of the brothers who was called 'Random'

Any idea what this might have been please?

The unicorn might be in one of the other books in the series. But this part:

is definitely, as Hex says, Nine Princes in Amber.

Yes yes yes thank you, exactly the one!

Amber was the place I was trying to remember.

Cheers both!

There's a unicorn on the cover of my collected Chronicles of Amber, so there must have been one somewhere in the sequence, but I don't recollect it.

I have only read the first book Princes in Amber and definitely no Unicorns in the first volume.

Maybe the OP read one of the collections (I think the first 5 books make one of the collections).

The unicorn is sacred to the house of Amber; considered a symbol of the Pattern. It has appeared to nominate the true heir to the throne, and at moments of import.

I totally forgot that. On the other hand, I read them when I was a teenager, so I'm allowed to have forgotten some of the things I read then. Never forgot Corwin's blinding and imprisonment, though, or Random.

its the moments of import bit I remember. Only makes a couple of appearances if I recall.

I can't entirely remember if I read all or one of the books. I know it was pretty long whatever it was there was a a fight on a round stone plateau or something guarded by a dragon type thing towards the end.
