Two or three years ago this short story was published by Harper Collins as a free download and now I would like to read it but I can't find it anywhere on the internet including Harper Collins. They have this page http://files.harpercollins.com/Assets/HC/US/Features/RoseOfFire/roseoffire.html which has links to three stores including Amazon, but none of them work, and there's also a link for reading the book online but that ends after the first three pages. Most frustrating.

I don't suppose anyone on Chrons has a copy do they?
 
I didn't like Prince of Mist as much as The Shadow Of The Wind, which I read first.
Did you try archive.org?
You'd need to search by website, they don't have a text with the title.

Found the deep link on Archive.org via your link (2012), but due to javascript nothing saved, so tried it direct

EDIT: There are about 3 pages and then it switches to a excerpt of The Prisoner of Heaven. Maybe it's meant to be a fragment?

Thanks Ray, unfortunately that's exactly what I found and it is meant to be the whole thing which clocks in at around 15-25 pages according reviews I've seen. Most frustrating, I'm not worried about whether it is free or not, I just can't find any copies for sale or download anywhere. Might try contacting Harper Collins direct. This short is supposed to be telling the story of how the Cemetery of Forgotten books was founded back in the days of the Inquisition.

I've only read the first two of the Cemetery books - Shadow of the Wind and The Angel's Game - both of which I loved. I've not read any of his stand alone books. Interestingly both of those Cemetery books were translated by Lucia Graves (daughter of poet Robert Graves) whereas The Prince of Mist is translated by Sarah Jane Coleman. I imagine it's possible that what you might have preferred in Shadow may have been down to the translation. I often wonder how much of my pleasure (or otherwise) in non English books is down to the translator. For example check out the huge variations in the different translations of the Iliad.

No, definitely the content/story/plot thingy, I've never liked that particular kind of story. I shall in time read the other Cemetery books.

Yes, it's a "too clever" piece of javascript to prevent easy download. I have a giant 1600 pixel high 15" screen, so I can easily screen grab protected content or PDFs* and then save, even then OCR.
Like protection on DVD and BluRay, all these kinds of things inconvenience ordinary users that want to format shift (I never read more than a page or two on LCD, but convert and read on my 9.7" Kindle or 6.8" Kobo real eInk eReaders). None of them ever stop real pirates. HDCP on HDMI is daft, as no-one is going to record uncompressed RGB, they will copy the disk or broadcast, or even point an HD camera at 42" HD TV in a dark room. Total idiocy.

[*No need to screen grab protected PDFs, almost all open source PDF viewers allow print or image export]

Yeah I know what you mean but why protect when you're giving it away for free on Amazon and such like? seems silly :(

I've sent an email to Harper Collins. We'll see what happens!

I know an organisation that wanted to protect out of copyright documents users uploaded from redistribution. Madness.

All they needed was a per connection daily limit, like Project Gutenberg implements.

Fwiw, I find Shadows of the Wind one of his weaker books - Daniel is a little too passive for my liking. Prisoner of Heaven is, for me, much stronger. Also, Marina is fabulous in its descriptions of Barcelona and I'd recommend it to anyone. :)

@Jo Zebedee Will do. I've had an auto reply saying they'll get back to me within 48 hours so we'll see what happens :) I almost wonder if Zafon gets sponsored by the Barcelona tourist office ;) I've never been there but I'll have to go on pilgrimage and visit all the Zafon locations!

I’ve tried to find the English version of the book, both as free or to buy, is there anybody here who has that book? I would gladly purchase a pdf/ebook copy from you. It’s sad that all of Zafron’s work isn’t available :(
