Star Trek: Discovery - new series in 2017

Quite the disparity between critical and audience opinions of the both the Orville and the Discovery.

I find myself looking forward to Discovery every week. The Orville wasn't on this week and I was like, Whatever. Then again, I don't really enjoy The Orville's comedy.

On social media, I see about 80 - 90% favorable comments for Discovery, and about a 50/50 split for Orville. Which makes me wonder where Rotten Tomatoes gets their "Audience Score" from.

The Orville started before Discovery did. Discovery was plagued with problems and people saw that. Those same people didn't give Discovery a shot. Thus Orville ratings are higher.

I prefer The Orville myself, but I like them both to one degree or another.

I haven't seen Orville, and likely won't have the opportunity for a while. It doesn't sound like my cup of tea, but I did enjoy Tim Allen's ST ripoff-comedy! So one never knows. :D

Nostalgia is why TOS is often considered "the best" ST series. Let's face it: If it were shown for the first time this year, it wouldn't make it through a full season. If it weren't for Nimoy and Kelley, the acting would have been abominable. By today's standards, the FX is a royal disaster.

TNG had the best acting. DS9 had the best storyline. Voyager had the best aliens. Enterprise - well, I liked it. It couldn't have been the first series, though, without many changes - much was left out, that only the context of previous series filled in for us.

I think Discovery has a chance to become the best of all the ST series. But only time will tell.

To be fair, the acting in STD has been very patchy so far, apart from Jason Isaacs and Doug Jones. Shatner was pretty decent in the episodes where the director was good enough to rein him in. Out of all the previous series, the only one I can still happily re-watch is TOS, and seasons 3 and 4 of TNG.

From people who rate shows on Rotten Tomatoes. It is the most popular movie and TV review site on the web. That screen capture is out of date, but if you look at the site today, the Orville and Discovery have 4,744 and 4,337 viewer ratings respectively. Those are pretty big audience samples - I'd be surprised if any site had more.

Personally, I prefer the Orville. It's an unabashed love-letter to TNG, with classical storylines of exploration and crew camaraderie. Humour is subjective, but I find it pretty funny in a lighthearted way. And even with the occasional off-colour joke, the Orville is something I can watch with the kids. Discovery? Not family-friendly at all.

Agreed - as was TNG's first year.

Seriously? I didn't think his acting was up to snuff until the third movie (and some scenes in #2).

I love them all!! :D

Agreed. I never thought Shatner was that good of an actor. Patrick Stewart is the best actor out of all the Star Trek Captains, but Kirk gets to beat Picard in my mind based on the situations that he was in and the warring Klingons he went after. Picard wouldn't last a minute in the 23rd century!

Yeah, I don't think Picard would have made a great war-time Captain. And he definitely wasn't as flexible as Kirk had to be.

Still, Picard's my favorite Captain. ;)

It might surprise some, but Janeway is my second favorite - mostly because, to me, she was far more like a "real" military Captain than all the rest.

I already think this. We'll have to see how this season ends before I completely make up my mind, but it's 80% up the ladder from 0% at this point. Is the show perfect? no Is the acting good? No. But they are paving a bold new future for Trek and CBSAA is probably going to be Trek's home on the internet for the foreseeable future. So all you haters out there better get used to it. Cause I'm expecting spinoffs!

Being that I mostly watch TOS movies and not the episodes since they are really dated. The nostalgia factor is not that big a deal to me, probably the fact that I'm only 28 years old helps too. I'm just extremely happy that there is Star Trek on TV again! Then again, I run a blog that is basically all about the positives of rehashing franchises so...I might be a little bit biased there. I liked the new Trek movies and the new Trek show a hell of a lot better than the new Star Wars movies. Of course I never really loved Star Wars in the first place.
