Star Trek: Discovery - new series in 2017

Yeah, I don't think Picard would have made a great war-time Captain. And he definitely wasn't as flexible as Kirk had to be.

Still, Picard's my favorite Captain. ;)

It might surprise some, but Janeway is my second favorite - mostly because, to me, she was far more like a "real" military Captain than all the rest.

As far as unpopular opinions go... You are talking to a guy who likes Jar Jar Binks after all. Voyager was my favorite series. Because of all the new tech and crazy scenarios they got themselves into. It really captured the heart of ST for me. To bodily go... DS9 had the best and most memorable crew though! I think I only disliked one person on that crew.

Discovery is becoming my favorite simply because of the tech and the differences in the philosophical challenges they face. I think the fact that they are a science vessel is so cool and has unlimited possibilities. They haven't gotten in to too many of the things that Voyager went through of course, but you have to remember we are only six episodes in! Just think of the possibilities if it lasts seven seasons like most of the rest of the shows.

nope for me it was Sisko as the best cap - and DS9 for the best ST

Best character ever in S.T. was Spock and Nimoy played the part to perfection. I was never all that enamored by either Kirk or Picard, both of them struck me as banty rooster sorts. Sisko was okay and Janeway absolutely believable.

No worries. I loved both Kirk and Picard and their rebel characters. :)

Seriously? I didn't think his acting was up to snuff until the third movie (and some scenes in #2).

Seriously :)

Funnily enough, I thought he was awful in the third movie.

Sisko was a good Captain. A great actor played him, too! :)

See, I thought Avery Brooks was bad, as wooden as they come. Just goes to show, different strokes etc etc :)

Spock, Data, Worf, Sisko, Janeway, Chakotay - all very memorable characters!

Agree with your first three. For me I like the eccentrics. So it'll have to go to Neelix, Dr. Phlox, Quark & Odo, and the EMH.

That's why it's hard for me to pick a favorite in Discovery. They are all eccentric. Right now it's between Lorca or Stamets. Each of their character development episodes were amazing. (the last two eps)

Definitely not! And I don't think they ever intended it to be.

True. But it's the first Star Trek that isn't family-friendly. And as Star Trek is one of the few shows I enjoy watching with my kids (we've been re-watching TOS and TNG together), that's a big negative for Discovery in my books. More evidence that broadly appealing TV is dead, and producers now assume shows are watched by individuals sitting alone on their personal screens in different rooms of the house.

I understand that. But I think CBS realized they needed an edgier show, to attract the numbers they were looking for.

Plus the fact most parents now days aren't as conscientious as you, and will allow their children to watch the show - violence, f-bombs and all.

I understand and agree with both of these from a monetary and social point of view, but not from the view of what's best for our children and even our society.

Agreed. I definitely wish the latter weren't true, but that is the state of parenting in our society.

I would have thought parents would be more conscientious about violence and swearing since screens are becoming the de facto child minder of choice.
(Sigh) I think that's the problem. Another is that when I watch Star Trek (the Original) I watched it with my parents and we could and sometimes did talk about it afterwards. Now we are more likely to all be in separate rooms watching different shows. --- I'm sorry for derailing this thread!
