Looking For Fantasy Series

Looking for a fantasy series based loosely on a Roman-type culture with each volume based on one of the four elements(earth,wind,fire & water). Main character was young female(tomboy type)with a stepmom who was very "willing". Included various characters & travel through portals. Read the series a while back & would love to find it again.
