An alien spaceship comes into earth's orbit and everyone on the planet gets the offer to leave in it, for good. In order to go they have to be standing within a certain distance of a body of water at midnight.
The ship interacts with the humans inside it; they can touch the walls and make colours, they can mould floor 'up' to make walls, the walls will grow food. The ship inadvertently gives them all a 'flu' like virus, a few die, but the rest turn out to be more well than they were before.
The principle characters are a scientist who goes on board with a military(?) team, and he finds that his grown-up daughter is on there too.
They all learn about their new home and what they are supposed to do with.
I remember a lot more plot than this, but I don't want to spoil it for someone who might like to read it for themselves
Cheers
