I'm sure I came across something within the past couple of years about a new fantasy series being published, where the author had reportedly spent 20 years working on it.

All I can remember is that the author was female, and that the first book was probably published within the past couple of years.

Not read it, but would like to give it a second look. :)

Thanks for the reply, dwndrgn - if I recall correctly, the first book of the series was 20 years in the writing. That's how I remembered it. I may be wrong, though. :)

A thought on this, some Indian lady author ..
Arundhuti (sic because I can't remember how to spell her first name) Roy spent twenty years writing a book.

Vague, I know, this is a Google if anyone feels sufficiently motivated :D

That's Arundhati Roy. While it is true that her second novel (The Ministry of Utmost Happiness) comes 20+ years after first, it doesn't sound like Fantasy:
The novel deals with some of the darkest and most violent episodes of modern Indian history, from land reform that disowned poor farmers to the 2002 Godhra train burning and Kashmir insurgency. Roy's characters run the gamut of Indian society and include a trans woman (hijra), a rebellious architect, and her landlord who is a supervisor in the intelligence service. The narrative takes place in Delhi.
