My 23 y/o step daughter has never seen SW before and has just bought me the box-set for Christmas (y)(y) - I'm quite certain she doesn't know DV is LS's dad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What order should I watch them with her?

Time-line (get JarJar out of the way quickly)?
Release date (shonky SFX to start with)?

I would watch the original trilogy first and then go to the theater for TFA.

I'd go with release date, too - so starting with the original Star Wars. It may seem a little dated in places, but still not bad for a film almost 40 years old. :)

The prequels may set too low a standard, and leave her scratching her head as to what all the fuss is about Star Wars in general...

Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and then the new one. There are no others. :D (I'm guessing about the new one -- I haven't seen it yet.)

And you have to go back in time and watch them on VHS, because that's the only way to escape from all the added garbage and wrongness.

There's two options really:

1. Original trilogy in release order. A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. This keeps the story in the right order and skips the largely terrible prequels. You literally miss nothing relevant to the franchise going forward. If at all possible get the despecialized editions or the original versions on VHS.

2. Machete order. A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, and Return of the Jedi. If you absolutely insist on watching the prequels, include them in this order to preserve the "I am your Father" reveal, whilst using the prequels basically as a flashback to explain things after Vader tries to bring Luke into the family business.

I would have to agree with Brian here. I still think that it's best to start in chronological order. The first trilogy still looks pretty good after nearly 40 years.

Watch the originals with her first then Force Awakens and leave it up to her whether or not she wants to see the crap ones. But warn her first.
