I'm looking for a book about a musician who decides to join a space ship emigrating from earth after breaking up with his rich girlfriend. He plays the saxophone and later in book the sun explodes. thanks

Samuel R. Delany's Nova is about a star going nova and a musician on a ship heading into the Nova but I don't remember enough to tell you if it might be the one you are looking for. I do not remember what instrument this musician played.
