Bed bugs develop resistance to widely used insecticides - BBC News

Quote:
A new study indicates that bed bugs in the US have developed resistance to neonicotinoids, the most widely used insecticide in the world.

Researchers found the blood sucking insects in Cincinnati and Michigan had "dramatic levels" of immunity to regular doses of the chemicals.

To kill these bugs required concentrations 1,000 larger than needed to eliminate non-resistant creatures.

The scientists say non-chemical methods of control now need to be considered.

I didn't think bed-bugs sucked blood - thought they ate dead skin cells

Dust mites (depressingly common) eat dead skin cells, and are thankfully harmless unless you're allergic.

Bed bugs (thankfully more rare) are blood feeders, they generally go unnoticed, but can cause rashes and allergic reactions in some cases.

Thanks for this :) Had I applied an ounce of brain power I would have known that 'cos when I worked on cruise ships we had a minor outbreak of bed bugs and people came to the med centre with bites/rashes! Doh!

I moved into a place, once, and was immediately put on the menu. Itch, itch, itch. You can find these tenacious little critters in five star hotels all over the world. They are world travelers and I urge anyone who travels to do the following: When you return from you trip wash EVERYTHING in the hottest water available. Put your baggage outside the house and spray it. Then, minutely inspect it for 'passengers.' Make no mistakes folks. These little #$(*&^#s are at plague condition one. And now we can't kill them? Hmm, apparently the meek will inherit the earth.

So Begbugs will be come the new rulers of Earth?
